Robert Ashley
Last monday 3 March 2014 Robert Ashley (1930) died. He holds an international reputation for his work in new forms of opera and multi-disciplinary projects. Ashley died three months after he finished his last opera, "Crash," and while it was in rehearsals for premiere at the 2014 Whitney Museum Biennial.
DE PLAYER had just confirmed in cooperation with Loevely Music and Robert Ashley to screen his televisoion opera Perfect Lives during the Operadays Rotterdam 2014. Perfect Lives (1984) is a television opera “about” bank robbery, cocktail lounges, geriatric love, adolescent elopement, et al, in the American Midwest.
From this new perspective we now can see it as a tribute to Ashley his groundbreaking work. Perfect Lives has been called "the most influential music/theater/literary work of the 1980s. Works such as this put to rest any doubts if opera can or should survive, and how.
More details about the screening soon in our agenda.
